![]() ![]() ![]() In 1996, the GIDS was transferred to the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust, a non-profit corporation that offers mental health services as part of the UK’s National Health Service. ![]() The GIDS was founded in 1989 by its original director, Domenico Di Ceglie, in connection with London’s St. The Tavistock Gender Identity Development Service From heated words splashed across tabloid covers and social media to mass resignations, open letters, book banning, and legal interventions, the controversy at the GIDS serves as something of a microcosm of the wider cultural debate on transgender children. Over the last few years, the tensions and conflicts among the GIDS personnel concerning how best to treat gender dysphoric children has become an international spectacle. The GIDS is the sole gender clinic serving children in Britain. Perhaps the best glimpse of this “Battle Line” can be found at the Gender Identity Development Service (the GIDS) housed within the London-based Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust. This issue has become, as one scholar puts it, the “Transgender Battle Line.” But no aspect of the transgender discussion has ignited more controversy than how best to care for children who experience gender dysphoria. Professor Moriarty is a criminal mastermind who doesn't commit the crimes himself but rather uses his intelligence and charisma to get other people to get their hands dirty for him. While Holmes solves many crimes and encounters plenty of bad guys throughout the 56 stories and 4 novels that feature him, Moriarty is the one who really becomes the biggest threat to Holmes. And that's what Sir Arthur Conan Doyle gave readers with Professor Moriarty. None of the other illustrations stand out, though, and I'm not even completely sure what the moral of the story's supposed to be. There's one cute illustration, where Leo tries to look "tough" in the mirror. The art isn't as exceptional as James's best work, and the story is fairly thin and feels even more quickly wrapped up than usual. It's not bad and not great - it's just somewhere in the "average, largely forgettable" category. This book was never one of my favorites as a child. ![]() Fortunately, I guess Past Me had thought ahead a little, since they were still sitting in the trunk of my car, instead of joining the library donation pile from the summer.
