In "Dead Man's Walk" McMurtry has contented himself with merely writing a ripping yarn. "Lonesome Dove" featured memorable characterizations and complicated, bittersweet relationships between men and women, as well as adventure. Incidentally, McMurty has interspersed his narrative with real historical figures, but he considers them as much his own as his fictional creations-for example, killing off one man some 60 years before the time of his actual death. ![]() In fact, there are few real characters in "Dead Man's Walk." Most of the men are the walking dead, swelling the scene because they'll be needed for the huge body count. The only continuing woman character in the book is the 200-pound prostitute Matilda Roberts. ![]() In this one, Gus meets Clara Forsythe, who will become the great love of his life, but their contacts occupy only a few pages.
